Located at the southern tip of the Bahamas chain, the white-sand beaches and turquoise sea of the Turks and Caicos islands offer a tranquil retreat. Of the 40 islands that make up Turks and Caicos, only eight are inhabited. Legend has it that Parrot Cay used to be known as Pirate Cay as it was here that pirate Anne Bonny stayed in the 1720s. The treasure on this island is now a 1,000-acre private island hideaway.
If you take a Turks and Caicos holiday between January and April, you may well get to see humpback whales breaching in the sea. They migrate each year to Mouchoir Bank, just to the south east of the islands. Many of the smaller islands and cays are protected habitats for wildlife including iguana and turtle. They’re well worth exploring. Flamingo, pelican and osprey are just a few of the 170 bird species found in the 338km² of protected wetlands of the Turks and Caicos Islands.
